Although Romola Garai baulked at answering any questions about marriage last year, the 31-year-old star of The Hour would not appear to be against the insitution in practice. I hear that she has discreetly married Sam Hoare, her long-term boyfriend.
Hoare, who is best known for the BBC comedy series Blandings, confirms to Mandrake that Romola is now his wife. What is more, he is about to traverse the Atlantic for her. “I’m moving to New York because my wife is doing a play off-Broadway,” says the actor at a preview screening of Gentleman’s Wager hosted by Johnnie Walker Blue Label in Knightsbridge. “I’m going to be doing a bit of acting, too, but mostly changing nappies in Brooklyn. We just found an apartment for four months, so we’ll be back in December.”
Sam, whose father is the investment banker Tim Hoare, has been courting the actress, who also starred in Atonement, for nearly three years and has a one-year-old daughter by her. He cast Romola as the leading lady in Having You, a film that he wrote and directed, about a man who proposes to his girlfriend, only to then discover that he has a seven-year-old son from a previous relationship.
Romola makes it a rule never to discuss her private life in public, but, in an interview in 2009, she did make the point that marriage was about more than just a day of celebration.
“Getting married isn’t just about an elaborate party where you get to be the centre of attention all day,” she said. “Maybe if we all made a bit more of a fuss of people celebrating their ten or 20 or 30 years together, rather than just clearing off after the nuptials, leaving them with nothing but John Lewis towels, then maybe we’d all be better off.”24.07.2014
